Editorial & Publishing

The Editor’s Association of Canada promotes and enables professional editing in Canada. The EAC connects editors with clients, and through professional development seminars and many other activities enhances the quality of editorial work.


The Association of Canadian Publishers represents over 140 Canadian-owned book publishers, including literary, general trade, scholarly, and education. The ACP aims to encourage the writing, publishing, distribution and promotion of Canadian books. Site includes a searchable database of member publishers.


The Canadian Publishers’ Council is Canada’s main English language book publishing trade association, and represents the interests of publishing companies that publish books and other media for a variety of markets.


The Word is Not Enough is an excellent UK-based editorial service, running the gamut from articles to layouts to project management.


Mathematics and Science

MacTutor History of Mathematics, based at the University of St Andrew's, Scotland, is the best (and best-known) historical resource for mathematics on the web. It’s indexed by biographies, history topics, and famous curves; whatever you’re looking for is probably here.


mathworld is an extensive reference resource aimed at, and contributed to by, the university mathematical community.


plus is an excellent internet magazine which aims to introduce readers to the beauty and the practical applications of mathematics.


The Nine Planets is “an overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of each planet and the major moons in our solar system.” Well-organized, visually appealing, and loaded with solar system stats.


The Official String Theory Web Site provides a clear, common-sense introduction to superstrings, cosmology, black holes, and more.


Home page of the Ansari X Prize foundation, including info about the new X Prize Cup (the X prize itself was won last year by Scaled Composites’ SpaceShipOne).


Scaled Composites proved last summer that with a little private investment and a lot of know-how you can send a pilot and a passenger above 100 km, return them safely, and do it all again within a fortnight.


Kistler Aerospace has a mission to reinvent earth-to-orbit capability in an affordable form: an uncrewed but reusable two-stage launcher.


Archaeology.Info has a nicely designed and scientifically sound feature on hominid evolution, back as far as the recent (and tentatively named) ardipithecus ramidus.


Teaching

Figure This! provides excellent cognitive challenges to get intermediate-grade students thinking mathematically.


Cut the Knot is a veritable smorgasbord of useful and interesting math info for senior high-school and unversity students, plus K-12 worksheets, “things impossible,”, links, and more.


The official website of Ontario’s Ministry of Education offers comprehensive info on the Ontario public-school system, and in particular lists full curriculum details for all subjects and grades. It’s easy to navigate, too.
